The Importance of the Female Cannabis Plant

Today is International Women’s Day … a good time to revisit the importance of the female cannabis plant.

For those of us who appreciate the therapeutic benefits of cannabis, we are enjoying the fruit of a female plants labor. She alone creates sticky, resinous buds rich in THC and terpenes.

Though male plants do produce a small amount of THC, only the female cannabis plant produces the higher levels that we all know and love. Male plants are required to create a seed crop – however, for the purpose of this post, we’re just focusing on the female.

Cannabis plants grown naturally from seeds have a 50/50 male to female ratio (so a larger number are grown initially and then male plants are separated) ; however, feminized seeds can also be procured to streamline the process.

Another way to grow only female plants is through cloning. Clones are cuttings from female cannabis plants known as mothers. Mothers are chosen based on strong genetics, overall plant health, and desired therapeutic benefits. Read more about cannabis cloning here at Leafly.

The next time you are enjoying the benefits of cannabis, remember to give thanks to the “green goddess” whose hard work helped make it happen.
